SHINee birthday gifts!

Though JH and TM's birthdays' have passed, the gifts for all three idols should arrive in time for Kibum's birthday on September 23.

If you were a hardworking young idol, what would you want from your fans for your birthday? (Aside from time off...)

어떻게 "ottoke" (how can or what should (i do)?)

This is probably one of my early favorite Korean words 어떻게.

It just sounds pretty and easy is pronounce... I hear it so often in K-Pop and K-Dramas. It seems as though Korean speakers use it as a way of signifying confusion/worry/concern about an action or decision. Somehow the word conveys a sense of longing for a resolution.

It's used in the bridge to the chorus in one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite K-Pop idol groups SHINee. The youngest in the group Taemin, uses it at the end of the bridge and the group transitions into the chorus.

In the clip below from an informal interview with a few of the members of another of my favorite K-Pop idol groups Super Junior, the word is used again repeatedly.

Tomorrow, I'll break 어떻게 down into it's component parts!

남자 "namja" (man)

My first Hangul/Korean word is 남자 (namja) which means man.

I was first introduced to this word through the K-Drama: Boys Over Flowers (according to Wikipedia, the title of BOF in Hangul is "꽃보다 남자" -- notice the characters for the "namja" sound).

I didn't really appreciate the use of the word until I heard this song by one of my favorite K-Pop groups: SHINee. The song is titled "Get it" -- wow...

SHINee's Minho uses the word in the first line of the song and I recognized it right away!

남 nam (the funky L is the n sound -- similar to the sound of n in the word now; the funky t is the a sound -- similar to the sound of the a in the word apple; the rectangular box is the m sound -- similar to the sound of m in the word money)

자 ja (the stool is the j or "ch" sound -- similar to the "ch" sound in church; and the funky t represents the same a sound we hear in the first syllable "nam" -- similar to the sound of the a in the word apple).
